On March 1, 2020, we announced the Plei App’s entrance into its third market, Orlando, FL! 🎢 We were so excited to finally welcome Central Florida to our family, but as luck would have it, the pandemic happened. 😭 We waited patiently (and we know our Orlando ballers were waiting patiently too) until finally in January 2021, we relaunched! 🔥
In March 2021, we began a brand new partnership with XL Soccer World and started hosting games at their two facilities, and we are looking forward to continuing doing so for many years to come. As part of our new blog series, we will be highlighting all of our partner facilities in every region where Plei has touched down. 🛬
If you’ve lived in Central Florida for a while, you’ve probably witnessed firsthand how soccer has exploded in popularity in Orlando over the last decade or so. It all culminated in 2013 when Orlando City SC completed its upgrade to an official MLS franchise and began play in March 2015, with the founding of women’s side Orlando Pride happening just a few months later. But in truth, it would not have been possible without genuine love for the beautiful game from across the entire region years prior. 💜
A city that loves soccer must also have the resources to back it up, and that means no more subpar soccer parks and cheaply-built sporting facilities. A place like Orlando had to step up their game if they’re going to have teams competing in the MLS and the NWSL. Safe to say that, in the last 8 years, they’ve done exactly that. 🤝
XL Soccer World is one of these establishments that has been at the forefront of the sudden Orlando footy craze of the 2010s. They first stepped foot in Central Florida back in 2010 with their Winter Park facility, and since late 2020 are also running a beautiful Lake Nona location. 😍
As you would have probably noticed by now from the title, this particular blog is about the indoor Lake Nona facility. Featuring two (2) 5G turf fields for 7v7 play and two (2) futsal courts for 5v5, This XL location is easily one of the most versatile in the area. Pickup basketball is even played here! 🏀 Plenty of amenities means there is something for everyone, so you don’t have to be Ronaldinho to have a good time here. 😅
XL Lake Nona is definitely up to date. Each of the four courts/fields are equipped with an interactive scoreboard that lets you not only keep track of who’s winning, but also play back your highlight reel golazos with built-in replay footage capability! Now you can actually back up your claims to your friends in the group chat when you tell them you scored an absolute worldie and they don’t believe you. 🤣
There are also plenty of seating areas in case those same friends want to witness your greatness in person. 👀
A total of 16 TVs located all around the building means that this XL facility is the perfect place for watch parties for the biggest games in world football. 16 TV screens is quite a lot when you really think about it, so we highly recommend bringing as many friends and family members as possible if you really wanna have an exciting viewing experience. 📺
For some people, whether or not there is any sort of food or drink service when deciding what facility to play at can be a dealbreaker, and understandably so. That’s why one of the standout features of XL Lake Nona is easily the inclusion of a full-service bar and kitchen. They call their food stand “The Sideline”, and they have some real good stuff on their menu. We would tell you to see for yourself, but we’ll go ahead and spoil it right now, just don’t yell at us if we make you hungry. 🍔
The Sideline menu features delicious items like quesadillas, burgers, wings, pizza, you name it. Here’s the full menu if you don’t believe us. There are even team platters, weekly specials, seasonal options, beer (draft, bottle or can) and wine available! 🍺🍷
As you would expect from such a premium facility, numerous leagues and programs also take place here. Adult soccer leagues for both futsal and regular turf play cover a variety of categories, age groups and skill levels. There are men, women and Co-ed leagues, and players can even select their preferred difficulty, ranging from competitive to recreational. 🙌
Volleyball is also played at XL Lake Nona via open gym and league formats, which is a testament to the versatility that this venue brings. In terms of league play, there are two Co-ed divisions available, so keep that in mind if you’re interested in XL volleyball. 🏐
Probably the coolest league of them all, though, is the family league, where you can build your squad consisting of your favorite aunt, nephew or grandparent and battle it out on the field with other fam dream teams. We don’t know about you, but this is a concept we’ve never previously heard of before, but we’re all for it. 😎
Coming in close second is the adult social league, and the best way we can describe this is by calling it real life Wii Sports. You assemble your best mates or co-workers and compete with other teams in soccer, volleyball, spikeball and flag football, rotating sports each week. Finally a way to prove once and for all who is the ultimate athlete in the office! 🤣
Don’t worry, the kids aren’t neglected at XL Lake Nona. In fact, they may just have it better than the adults, with 7+ unique programs, camps and leagues for both soccer and basketball at their disposal. We wanted to highlight that one of these programs is a special needs soccer camp, which is once again proof that this Orlando facility is truly determined to leave nobody out. 🫶
Oh, and former Manchester United midfielder Alan Smith is the director of the XL youth academy. 🔴
