In a crucial move to continue making our presence felt in the Midwest, the Plei App officially debuted in our 25th region, Kansas City! 🍖 We kicked off this region expansion in June 2024, partnering with an expansive indoor facility known as EPIC Center KC. 🤝

Now, we’re offering games at another venue: The Soccer Lot! As part of our ongoing blog series, we will be highlighting all of our partner facilities in every region where Plei has touched down. 🛬

From their humble beginnings playing on portable fields to later moving into a dedicated indoor facility, this soccer hub has truly transformed the game in Kansas City. 🔄️

The Soccer Lot, which opened in October 2015, features two (2) state-of-the-art indoor playing fields with synthetic turf that was most recently replaced in April 2024. Designed for both competitive leagues and private events, this vibrant space provides an inviting atmosphere for KC ballers of all skill levels to enjoy the sport they love.

As far as game sizes are concerned, each pitch is suitable for five-a-side, which is what The Soccer Lot is all about. You’ll find that both fields here are surrounded by dasher boards, which prevents the ball from going out of bounds. As a result, action is virtually nonstop, a detail that encourages and pushes players to their stamina limits.

Being that it’s 5v5, close-quarters skills as well as the ability to make quick decisions are also put to the test, naturally.

At Plei, we work to highlight all of our partner facilities that we work with on a daily basis, as well as the public fields & parks that we host games at in order to help you be as prepared and informed as possible prior to your pickup game. Of course, we always make sure to mention the most important details to you first, before then doing a bit of a deeper dive into the facility.

One of those deep dives that we try our best to include is the facility’s background, because more often than not, there tends to be a unique story there. Our goal is to put that story on a pedestal because, as you might expect, starting and running a successful business is far from an easy task. Take it from us at Plei first-hand.

It’s our way of not only showing our appreciation to the facility for working with us and helping advance the sport we all love in their region, but simply to help bring them more exposure, because they deserve it. After all, we all play a special part in growing the beautiful game in our local communities.

All this being said, The Soccer Lot is one of those facilities that has quite the special history behind them. If you’re still with us, please feel free to read on if you’d like to learn more about who they are.

In Fall of 2015, The Soccer Lot achieved their long-sought-after milestone of operating out of a full-fledged building. The years leading up to this were crucial to this dream turning into a reality, though.

The journey began in 2012 with just four teams and a portable boarded field, with founder Ian Mohrmann aiming to introduce the excitement of 5-a-side soccer to the Kansas City metro area. Over the next three years, they organized leagues & pickup games at various parks, sometimes even setting up in the street if it was necessary.

What this did was gradually grow their presence within KC; not only were local players learning about The Soccer Lot, but Mohrmann was gaining valuable experience when it came to running a successful business. Their events were very visible, so it didn’t take long for the word to spread.

Seeing these positive results, Mohrmann began searching for a permanent home for The Soccer Lot as early as 2013. Two years on, he set his sights on a formidable candidate: a 25,000 square-foot building, previously a Coke bottling facility. After some necessary renovations, the space was revamped for only the very best 5-a-side in town.

The doors of The Soccer Lot opened to the public in October of 2015, much to the approval of their loyal members that had been playing with them since 2012.

It’s been nearly a decade since that moment, and little has changed. The Soccer Lot has fully transformed into one of the most iconic places to enjoy the beautiful game in all of Kansas City, offering a welcoming, vibrant environment for all soccer lovers.

Is their mission in full effect? We would say so. Is it over? Not even close.
