There’s nothing quite like soccer in the Big Apple. That’s why we’ve partnered with multiple pickup leagues across New York City to bring you all more field options! These leagues host their matches year-round on dozens of unique pitches across NYC, and as part of this partnership, we are bringing Plei App games to their spaces in order to fill in on days that the leagues aren’t running.
That being said, these blogs will answer all the questions that you usually ask before you head out to play some ball, like…
Is it a 6v6, 7v7, 8v8 or 9v9 field? Artificial grass or natural? What are the exact measurements? Where should I park? What subway train do I take and where do I get off? Are there good food/drink options nearby? Are there any other cool things to do or see in the surrounding area?
Fear not: all these questions and more will be answered within each blog, so you can confidently suit up, head out and have fun playing some pickup footy, New York style. 🗽😎
You’ll find this park uniquely nestled in the cultural fabric of Greenpoint, an evolving Brooklyn neighborhood with a large Polish American community.
The town actually has quite the hipster appeal, and Newtown Barge Playground is here to throw some footy into the mix.
If this is your type of vibe, then don’t hesitate to stop by and play in a Plei App pickup game here. After you're done, we won’t blame you if you decide to take a stroll to see everything that Greenpoint has to offer.

Newtown Barge Playground is yet another stomping ground of the Brooklyn Pickup Soccer Club, and we couldn’t help but join in on the fun.
Although the turf space is shaped to accommodate baseball and softball, the beautiful game is easily the dominating sport here. You’ll find two (2) separate fields for 4v4 and 5v5 games, which when combined create a larger space for 7v7 games.
That’s exactly what you’ll find on the Plei App.
While balling out, you’ll be able to enjoy scenic views of the surrounding Brooklyn area and - of course - the incredible Manhattan skyline across the East River.
There’s just something about waterfront pickup soccer that just never gets old. If you haven’t tried it out yet, what are you waiting for?
All of our pickup games that take place here are hosted thanks to a partnership with Brooklyn Pickup Soccer Club. Find them available on the Plei App today. 📲
The Plei App first hosted a pickup game at Newtown Barge Playground on February 2, 2024, and we continue to play here today.
As we always mention, we aren’t responsible for anything that may happen to your car while you’re balling out on these beautiful NYC fields.
But we try to give our best advice in terms of where to park, though, so that’s exactly what we’ll do.
Fortunately, you won’t have much to worry about at Newtown Barge Playground. Street parking is available along Commercial Street, Dupont Street and West Street. If all spots are taken, then try looking a little further down these streets; you probably won’t have to walk more than a block to the park.
For subway goers, you’ll want to make your way to the Greenpoint Ave station (G service), which is the closest one to the park. Once you get off, it’s about a 10-minute, half-mile walk to Newtown Barge. As an alternative, a Citi Bike station is available right across the street from the station entrance.
If you’re not feeling some pregame cardio, then feel free to hop on a bus. Bear in mind that the closest bus stops to the park are still a couple blocks, so regardless you’ll have to walk the rest of the way.
Here are the closest bus stops to Newtown Barge Playground.
If you decide to take a Citi Bike, you can leave it at this station.
Once you’ve made it to Newtown Barge Playground, you have one last step: actually getting onto the green turf. Don’t worry, we have you covered.
You can enter the field via Commercial Street. There are multiple gate entrances on this side of the park; one on the far left, one on the far right and one near the middle. They may not all be unlocked at once, so make sure to be on the lookout for whichever one is open.
IN PROGRESS
We know you’ll probably be hungry after your pickup game.
Thankfully, there are two markets right down the road from Newtown Barge Playground on Commercial Street If you just want to grab a quick snack before you head home.
If you’re craving something more put together, then check out these two options we listed below.
Bakeri (PENDING) - Rustic-chic destination for artisanal coffee, fresh baked goods & casual cafe fare. They also sell a variety of sandwiches, which are available during their lunch hours of 11am to 4pm. Their Greenpoint location is open Monday thru Friday from 7am to 6pm and Saturday & Sunday from 8am to 6pm.
Pure Green - Juice Bar Greenpoint (Located right beside Newtown Barge Playground on the right side of the field. You can’t miss it.) - Everything a juice bar typically offers and more. Look forward to smoothies, bowls, juices, toasts and plenty more healthy options. Open ‘til 8pm.
Newtown Barge Playground is located at the triangular tip intersection of Commercial and Dupont streets on the northwestern corner of the Greenpoint neighborhood.
The park features an artificial turf sports field, lawn, and shoreline walkway. The field was acquired by the city in 2014 for parks purposes, while the lawn was added in the past decade, connecting the park to the water’s edge. Its name is taken from a barge terminal located on the shoreline when Greenpoint was an industrial hub.
