Texas is our second home after Florida, so we were never going to stop at just Houston and DFW. In early April 2024, Plei officially expanded into a third region within the Lone Star State: the beautiful city of Austin! 🎸
We celebrated this by partnering once again with a multi-location facility that just so happened to open their first venue in Austin just a few weeks prior: Q&B Sports. 📍
Now, we’ve added another top facility to the app: First Touch Soccer Academy! As part of our ongoing blog series, we will be highlighting all of our partner facilities in every region where Plei has touched down. 🛬
Boasting one of the best academies in the region is First Touch Soccer Academy, a versatile facility located in the Lakeline neighborhood of North Austin. You’ll find them near the northwest corner of the Homestead Shopping Center, which is right down the road from Lakeline Mall.
We say versatile for a number of reasons, one of them being the fact that they offer both indoor and outdoor spaces, all for the beautiful game. Since the photos already gave it away, let’s start by talking about their pristine outdoor pitch, which sets the stage for some fast-paced 5-a-side footy.
Boards & nets are installed around the borders of this synthetic field, but there’s no overhead net. So, you’ll have to be a bit careful as to not kick too hard.
In case the Austin weather is acting up, a field space is available indoors as well. Pickup games can definitely take place here as well, but this turf is more often than not reserved for academy training sessions.
We mentioned that First Touch Soccer Academy offers some of the best academy programming in the area; luckily, that still hasn’t changed 6 paragraphs later.
This status can be credited to one person and one person only: Coach Teddy.
If you’re a regular at First Touch, you know Teddy as being the owner, founder & CEO of the facility. Originally from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, he moved to Texas at a young age and eventually was chosen to train with the Houston Dynamo Youth Academy.
He would then go on to enjoy a fruitful collegiate soccer career as an attacking midfielder at Carson-Newman University and then later Concordia University, contributing in their first winning season in the school’s history.
Much of Teddy’s post-college career has consisted of coaching and volunteering. All this background eventually brought him to open the First Touch Soccer Academy in 2019.
It’s no secret that Teddy’s knowledge of and passion for the beautiful game is much of the reason for the success of his facility, but none of it would be possible if not for his wonderful personality that seems to win over the hearts of all who walk through his doors.
